Show Synopsis
As the S.S. American prepared to set sail from New York to England, Billy Crocker, assistant to Wall Street tycoon Elisha J. Whitney, delivers a ticket and money to his boss, but rejects the advances of Reno Sweeny (I Get A Kick Out of You), an evangelist-turned-nightclub singer. Billy stows away on board (No Cure Like Travel; Bon Voyage) in hopes of wooing wealthy debutante Hope Harcourt instead, when “Moonface” Martin, a gangster known as “Public Enemy 13” disguised as a minister, and his accomplice Erma give Billy a ticket that belonged to gangster Snakeyes Johnson. Reno encourages Billy to pursue Hope (You’re the Top), though Hope is engaged to a wealthy Englishman, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, a marriage arranged by Hope’s mother, Evangeline Harcourt, much to Billy’s despair (Easy To Love). Elisha J. Whitney's interest in Mrs. Harcourt rekindles (Crew Song). As the Sailors sing of work and love (There’ll Always Be A Lady Fair), old pals Moonface and Reno friends (Friendship) decide to help Billy break up Hope’s engagement to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Billy dons various disguises to woo Hope (It’s De-lovely) and evade his boss. Billy is mistaken for “Public Enemy Number One" and celebrated as a celebrity (Anything Goes).
As Billy enjoys his newfound VIP status (Public Enemy Number One), Reno entertains the passengers with her nightclub act (Blow Gabriel, Blow). Hope reveals Billy's identity and resigns herself to a loveless marriage to Sir Evelyn (Goodbye, Little Dream Goodbye). Billy is thrown into the brig, where Moonface Martin attempts to lift his spirits (Be Like the Bluebird), but Billy pines for Hope (All Through the Night). Reno develops a liking for Sir Evelyn, who shows her his passionate side (The Byron In Me). Billy and Moon switch clothing with Spit and Dippy, two juvenile cons in the brig, and escape. As Erma, who has taken an interest in the Purser, warns him she has high standards (Buddy, Beware), Billy, Moon, and Reno appear just in time to prevent the wedding of Hope and Sir Eveyln (Finale).
