Bringing the Gryphon to Life and Breaking Records
This year, Grammar has seen school spirit shine both in athletics and in the arts thanks to the talents of Grade 12 student Bianca Grossi.
A New Gryphon for the Gym
The new Gryphon mural in the gym began as a Grade 10 art project focused on anatomy. When Ms. Colley-Leger '09, Director of Athletics, suggested creating a large-scale mural, Bianca reimagined the mascot by combining features of birds and lions.
Her first design was very detailed, so over the summer she simplified it into a clean graphic that could work as part of Grammar’s crest. The finished design shows the Gryphon in an assertive position, ready to take flight. The gold wings were added to symbolize high achievement and excellence, qualities that Grammar strives for in athletics, academics, and community life.
“The aim was to breathe life into the mascot,” Bianca said. “We wanted to turn something very medieval and archaic into an image that reflects the schools modernity while still upholding the values that the gryphon represent in heraldry - strength, courage, leadership, guardianship and wisdom."
The mural now has a permanent home in the gym, where it will inspire students for years to come.
Success on the Track
Alongside her work in the arts, Bianca has also had a record-breaking summer in athletics. She competed at the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Calgary, Canada’s top competition for U16 and U18 athletes.
Bianca placed 10th in the U18 women’s 1500m and 4th in the 3000m, setting a new Grammar Senior Girls’ record with a time of 10:04.10. To qualify for Nationals, she had already broken the Grammar Senior Girls’ 1500m record at the Legion team trial meet in Dartmouth with a time of 4:39.94.
She trains six days a week with the support of coaches Mr. Beazley and Ms. Smith, and also uses rowing as cross-training. “Even though running is an individual sport, Nationals gave me the chance to be part of a really supportive team,” she said.
Inspiring Excellence
Through both art and athletics, Bianca Grossi ’25 has made a lasting mark on Grammar. Her work shows creativity, dedication, and school pride, and she continues to inspire others to aim high in every area of school life.
