Shelving the Future Expands Access to Multilingual Books
Shelving the Future, a student-led initiative by Joyce, Maryam, and Mimi, continues to grow in both scope and impact at Halifax Grammar School.
This fall, the group organized a month-long, school-wide book drive that collected 321 book donations. What began as a project focused on French-language resources has now expanded to support access to books in all non-English languages. The donated books will be shared with CSAP, Halifax Grammar School, and multilingual schools across Nova Scotia.
Rooted in the group’s experiences with language learning, Shelving the Future aims to reduce barriers to literacy by expanding access to diverse, high-quality reading materials. Through thoughtful planning and community engagement, the students are working to ensure that language is not a limitation to learning.
This year, the initiative received a Gordon Stirrett Community Service Grant to support the next phase of the project. As Shelving the Future continues to evolve, we look forward to seeing how Joyce, Maryam, and Mimi build on this momentum and deepen the impact of their work.
